Words from the Adult Volunteers and Others

"Many times we think that the safety message may be lost due to the language barrier.  However, the students continue to share their experiences in and around the migrant camps where they are applying the safety lessons that they have learned at Safety Day.  After one of the housing units caught fire, the students discussed the incident – what caused it, treatment for burns, and what to do if their own unit caught fire.  Not only did they ask the right questions, but they also came up with the answers themselves.  They were able to use information from a variety of Safety day presenters to get the answers.  The students then wrote a fire prevention plan for their personal housing unit; conducted a safety check of their unit.  They were asked to tell their parents about fire prevention." —Lead Teacher, State Migrant Education Program, Beaufort, SC

“The 1st Annual Safety Day was a smashing success.  Nearly 150 children from all over the Wiregrass Area spent the day learning about safety behaviors on the farm and at home… I just wanted to take time from your busy schedule to say a sincere thank you.  Your assistance in making this program available will go a long way in reaching our vision of ‘living in a community without harm.’” —Fire Chief, Dothan, AL

“The kids were given extremely relevant information they can use.  It was geared perfectly for their level – no wasted time.  This was the most interesting field trip yet.  This is proof that you don’t need to leave your county to truly have a “great” field trip… Thanks!” —Teacher, Henrietta, TX

“I don't believe I've ever seen a community so committed to a cause as this one.  The coordinators said they had more offers for help than they needed.  One (instructor) told me he would just like to do Safety Days all day, every day.  I've never doubted the importance of these events, but, somehow, the experience of seeing this brand Safety Day come together as it did, reinforced the overall significance of what is accomplished with this work.” —University Program Evaluator, Tuscaloosa, AL“

I really liked networking with caring people and promoting community spirit.” —Volunteer, Odessa, TX

“We appreciate all that you do to help us spread the word about farm safety.  There is nothing worse than caring for a child and their family in the ER after a tragic incident.” —Coordinator and Volunteers, Quasqueton, IA
